François Houle at l' Espace Dubreuil
Internationally acclaimed clarinetist / composer François Houle has built a body of work that hovers above categories and styles. His playing reflects his ongoing interest in jazz experimentalism, contemporary classical vocabularies and instrumental extended techniques. His improvisational style draws from Evan Parker and William O Smith's multi-layered sonic explorations and Anthony Braxton's catalogue of linear sound formings to create a highly personalized language synthesis. He has worked with a cross section of international musicians including Marilyn Crispel, Wayne Horvitz, Dave Douglas, the NOW Orchestra, Evan Parker, Paul Plimley, Myra Melford, Benoit Delbecq, and others.
Paul Plimley Vancouver pianist / composer / improviser Paul Plimley transforms the piano into a veritable orchestra. He has synthesized jazz traditions, classical influences and elements of new music into a number of stylistic approaches, which he distils through his original compositions and improvisations. A list of Paul's global musicien associations includes work with Cecil Taylor, Barry Guy, Joey Baron, Han Bennink, Trichy Sankaran and Barre Phillips.
Coat Cooke is an internationally known saxophonist, improviser, composer, co-artistic director of New Orchestra Workshop, and is founder and co-leader of the NOW Orchestra. His works composing for dance, spoken word, film and video. He has worked with George Lewis, Butch Morris, Wadada Leo Smith, René Lussier and Barry Guy.
Paul Blaney Acoustic and electric bassist and composer, has been active in the Vancouver music scene, playing both mainstream and avant-garde jazz styles with musicians such as Marilyn Crispell, Myra Melford, François Houle, Tony Wilson, Mike Zilbur, Al Wiertz, Sandro Camerin, and more recently Barry Guy, George Lewis, René Lussier, Freddie Studer, Elizabeth Fischer, Rick Bochner, Pierre Tanguay, Ingrid Jensen, Phil Haynes, Paul Smoker, Vinnie Golia, Lauro Rossi and Carlo Dato. In 1989, played in Amsterdam, with Darren St. Clair. Also, formed Garbo's Hat with Kate Hammett-Vaughan and Graham Ord.
Dylan van der Schyff Highly sought-after drummer Dylan van der Schyff works with many Vancouver-based ensembles ( Talking Pictures, New Orchestra Workshop, Brad Turner, François Houle, Peggy Lee and Tony Wilson among others and collaborates in many theatre, dance and film projects. He has toured and recorded with many national and international musicians such as Georges Lewis, Barry Guy, Mark Dresser, Dave Douglas, Barre Philips and Louis Sclavis.
Bernie Arai Vancouver-based drummer Bernie Arai performs, records and teaches with a diverse variety of styles ans idioms troughout his career, spanning jazz, hip hop, japanese taiko, improvised music and pop.
As a sideman, he works with groups such as the Brad Turner Trio, Uzume Taiko Ensemble, the Ross Taggart Quartet and Diversions. Bernie also lead hid own groups, including a trio featuring original music, a quartet which performs the music of Ornette Colemen called To Be Ornette To Be, and a sextet paying tribute to Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers co-lead by Jon Bentley. His latest project is a series of duets with pianist Chris Gestrin called Wabi, which explores the Japanese aesthetic of shibui (the principes which also gouvern the Japanese tea ceremony and other Japanese arts.
